New Standing Faculty Appointments

Dr. Joli Chou (MD'04, GD'07)	Dr. Claire Mitchell

Penn Dental Medicine welcomes two new members to its full-time standing faculty – Dr. Joli Chou (MD'04, GD'07), as Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology-Clinician Educator, and Dr. Claire Mitchell, as Associate Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology.

Dr. Chou, whose appointment was effective July 1, holds a BSc in molecular biology and genetics from the University of Toronto and earned her DMD from Tufts University in 2000 and her MD from Penn in 2004. She completed her Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Penn Dental Medicine in 2007 and a Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship at Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston, W.Va. in 2009. In addition to her clinical teaching responsibilities, Dr. Chou has an active practice at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Hospital, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her research interests include facial trauma and dentofacial deformities.

Dr. Mitchell comes to Penn Dental Medicine from Penn's School of Medicine, where she was part of the Department of Physiology since 1999, first as Research Assistant Professor (1999-2006), and most recently, as Research Associate Professor (2006-2009). Dr. Mitchell's appointment was effective September 1. She holds a PhD in physiology from University College London, U.K., and earned a B.Sc. in neurobiology from McGill University, Canada. Dr. Mitchell also completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Physiology at both Cardiff University, UK (1992-1995) and Penn's School of Medicine (1995-1999). Her teaching responsibilities will include co-supervision of the physiology course in addition to multiple lectures in the course. Her research interests include pressure-dependent neural signaling and lysosomal degradation.
