Construction on the Schattner Center is proceeding at
a steady pace with much of the activity over the past several weeks
focusing on masonry. Nearly all the external wall block work is now
completed for the building's north section. This work involves laying
cinder blocks onto the building's steel frame, providing the base to
which the brick facade will eventually be applied. And in the south
section, the cinder block walls are going up in the basement level.
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work continues in the north section
as well - the large pipe chases, through which electrical wiring and
plumbing pipes will eventually be run, are being hung throughout, and
the sprinkler system piping is now being installed.
Contractors are also continuing to install the ductwork
for the HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system. On
the south section of the building, workers are nearing completion of
the steel decking - all that remains to be finished is the third floor
and the link to the Evans Building.
Facilities Manager Jerry Friel estimates that the third-floor
decking will be up by the beginning of next week, and the final shipment
of steel for the link to Evans is scheduled to arrive during the next
two to four weeks. In addition, the first-level subfloor has been completed,
and plans call for the concrete to be poured on the second floor by
the end of next week, creating the subfloor on this level.
Exploratory work has also begun in preparation for the
eventual breakthrough into the Evans Building.
