Mission Statement

The mission of Penn Dental Medicine is to educate predoctoral and graduate dental students in the highest quality clinical and research environment.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine) is embarking on a new era of reshaping strategic initiatives driven by critical challenges within oral health care and the School itself. Challenges to oral health care include the growing emphasis on the consequences of disparities in oral diseases and access to oral health care, the demand for evidenced-based dental care practices and the increased need for oral health research, economic pressures that affect reimbursement for dental care and dental care providers, and greater attention to the diversity of the U.S. population and its varied oral health care needs. Challenges to the School include increased competition for the most talented faculty members and students in a competitive environment; ensuring the School’s national and international prominence; the need to reflect national diversity in faculty, staff, and student bodies; and maintaining the pre-eminent stature of Penn Dental Medicine in the current economic environment.

As we advance in this new decade, Penn Dental Medicine is committed to beginning a collaborative process to develop a ten-year Strategic Plan for 2010-2020 among all stakeholders. As we build on the strong foundation of the School’s considerable history and current programs, we plan for excellence in our teaching, research, and patient care missions in order to meet society’s oral health needs.

Penn Dental Medicine advances oral health by educating clinical dentists and fostering leaders in research, education, and clinical care both locally and globally. Faculty and students strive toward eminence by increasing access to oral health care and professional education, integrating knowledge across disciplines, and engaging with our local, national, and global communities by continued innovation and research.

Penn Dental Medicine excels in discovering new knowledge in fundamental biology and dental medicine and disseminates this knowledge through discovery-oriented methodologies enhanced by the latest technologies. Penn Dental Medicine excels in instruction, research, and patient care in dental medicine and inspires, demands, and thrives on the need to continuously improve the quality of programs, produce future leaders, and be the best in all of its pursuits.

Penn Dental Medicine’s activities in research, teaching, and clinical care promote lifelong learning relevant to a dynamic society and a rapidly expanding, multidisciplinary body of knowledge. Penn Dental Medicine is committed to share this knowledge through a comprehensive range of service activities with the local, national and global communities.
