Faculty

Lawrence M. Levin, DMD, MD
Dr. Levin is Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology-Clinician Educator and Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Levin is also Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and Chief of the Division of Dentistry at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He lectures in the anesthesiology, pain control, emergency, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, pharmacology, and pathology courses. In addition, he lectures for the Oral Surgery residency program and the Division of Advanced Dental Education. "Dr. Levin's research interests include clinical trials for postoperative analgesics and site-specific characteristics of orofacial bone marrow stromal stem cells." His clinical interests include pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental implantology, and surgical correction of dentofacial deformity.

Lee Carrasco, DDS, MD
Dr. Carrasco is Assistant Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral Surgery/Pharmacology. He received his M.D. degree form the University of Miami and received his D.D.S degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. In addition to his teaching responsibilities he has conducted research involving facial trauma and condylar position.

Joli Chou, DMD, MD
Dr. Chou is an Assistant Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral Surgery/Pharmacology. She received her DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and her MD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Chou completed her residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in craniomaxillofacial surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center. In addition to her clinical teaching responsibilities, she has an active practice at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her research interests include facial trauma and dentofacial deformities.

Joseph Foote, DMD, MD
Dr. Foote is a Clinical Associate Professor of Oral Surgery/Pharmacology and Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Presbyterian Medical Center and at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. He received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He has established a reputation in microsurgical repair of maxillofacial nerve injuries.

Helen Giannakopoulos, DDS, MD
Dr. Giannakopoulos is Assistant Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral Surgery/Pharmacology. She lectures in oral surgery trauma and runs an active clinical practice at our Hospital and the clinic at the Dental School. She is currently involved in TMJ research.

Barry H. Hendler, DDS, MD
Dr. Hendler is Associate Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Hendler received his dental degree from Temple University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP). He completed an internship in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at MCP and residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Hospital. A pioneer in temporomandibular joint laser arthroscopy, Dr. Hendler has published and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Dr. Hendler serves as medical director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery faculty practices as well as Director of Postgraduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Hendler has long maintained an interest in hair restoration procedures and directs Penn's OMS/Cosmetic Surgery Associates' satellite practice. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and past President of the Delaware Valley Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Elliot V. Hersh, DMD, MS, PhD
Dr. Hersh is Professor of Oral Surgery/Pharmacology and Director of the Division of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He runs a very active clinical research program that plays a key role in developing and carrying out clinical protocols. His analgesic research team was instrumental in the granting of FDA approval to a number of analgesic and anesthetic agents such as ibuprofen liquigels (Advil Liquigels), OTC ketoprofen (Orudis KT), extended-release etodolac (Lodine XL), 4% articaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine (Septocaine 1:200,000) and the transoral lidocaine patch (Dentipatch). His studies of analgesic agents have been published in peer review journals such as the Journal of the American Dental Association, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, Clinical Therapeutics, Current Medical Research and Opinions, and The Journal of Clinical Dentistry. He was the 2007 recipient of the International Association of Dental Research Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology Distinguished Scientist Award. Dr. Hersh directs and lectures in the undergraduate pharmacology and clinical therapeutics courses, the postgraduate clinical pharmacology course, and delivers presentations to the undergraduate Penn Dental Medicine students in the pain control and geriatrics series. He also teaches continuing education courses for Penn Dental Medicine and has been awarded the University's highest teaching honor, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the Dental School's Excellence in the Teaching of Basic Science Award 16 times. He is also chairman of IRB #3, of the University's Committee on Studies Involving Human Beings, and sits on the University's Standing Conflict of Interest Committee and the Human Research Advisory Committee to the Vice Provost of Research.

John W. Mooney, DDS
Dr. Mooney is a Clinical Associate Professor of Oral Surgery/ Pharmacology and Director of the Oral Surgery Clinic at the School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Mooney is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry and completed his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Lincoln Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. His clinical interests include dentoalveolar, pre-prosthetic surgery, and implant dentistry. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition to the clinic facilities at the dental school, Dr. Mooney sees patients at the faculty practice in the Robert Schattner Center at Penn Dental Medicine.

Christopher Perrie, DDS, MD
Dr. Perrie received his dental degree from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his residency training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He practices primarily at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and additionally at the Penn Dental Medicine outpatient Oral Surgery Clinic. Dr. Perrie's primary focus is on dentoalveolar and implant surgery, facial trauma and oral pathology.

Peter D. Quinn, DMD, MD
Dr. Quinn is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology-Clinician Educator. He served as Schoenleber Chair of the School's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology and as Chair of the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery within the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania from 1986 to July 2008. Effective July 1, 2008, he has been appointed as Vice Dean for Professional Services for the School of Medicine and Senior Vice President of the Health System for Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he is co-director of the multi-disciplinary TMJ and Facial Pain Clinic at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His primary research interests are in the alloplastic reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint and vascular malformations of the maxillofacial skeleton. He was a principal investigator in a ten-year clinical trial for the only FDA approved stock prosthesis for reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint. Dr. Quinn has completed a surgical atlas for temporomandibular joint surgery, which has been published by Elsevier. He has received both the Earle Banks Hoyt Award and the Lindback Award in recognition for distinguished teaching. In 2002, he was recognized as Health System Champion for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. In 2009, he was elected as President of the American Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons.

Kendra S. Schaefer, DMD
Dr. Schaefer is Assistant Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral Surgery, where she focuses her research activities on "Quality of Life for Head and Neck Cancer Patients." In addition to her clinical teaching responsibilities, Dr. Schaefer is a PCU leader at Penn Dental Medicine and runs the externship program in prosthodontics at HUP. She maintains an active practice Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at the practice in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

David C. Stanton, DMD, MD, FACS
Dr. Stanton is an Associate Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a graduate of both the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. He completed his residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in maxillofacial cosmetic surgery at Northwestern University. He is the program director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program and course director of the third-year oral surgery course at Penn Dental Medicine. He has lectured nationally on several of his fields of interest, including cosmetic facial surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, and maxillofacial trauma. His research interests include obstructive sleep apnea, hair transplantation and facial trauma. He is currently a member of the examination committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also a section editor for the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Self Assessment Tool (OMSSAT), the national in-service training examination for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency programs.
