Women's Forum Presents "Empowering Patients to be Effective Collaborators: 21st Century Prescription for Health and Wellness"
by Dr. Marie A. Savard
Levy Building, B-13

Dr. Marie A. Savard (NHP '70, NU'72, M'76, INT '80), an internationally-recognized internal medicine physician, expert on wellness, and champion for patient rights has developed a simple but revolutionary program that teaches people how to partner with their physicians and take charge of their health care. Many people know far more about their car's maintenance record or their pet's medical history than they know about their own health history. Not until they are suddenly faced with a serious diagnosis or a chronic health condition do people recognize the importance of their specific medical histories and risk factors and taking charge of their health. Dr. Savard learned this first hand from personal and patient experiences and became even more passionate that patients must take control of their own health and health information. As a result, she developed a simple but revolutionary system to inspire and teach people how to manage their own health care.

Detailed in her three nationally acclaimed books, How to Save Your Own Life: The Savard System for Managing – and Controlling – Your Health Care and The Savard Health Record, and The Body Shape Solution to Weight Loss and Wellness, her system teaches people to trust their own instincts, collect their medical records, identify their own risk factors, research their conditions, shoulder the responsibility for prevention and wellness behaviors, and work in a fruitful partnership with their practitioners.

At the end of her presentation, participants will be able to:

• Identify common myths and behaviors that can jeopardize care and treatment and that contribute to rising health care costs and medical mistakes.

• Develop simple but powerful strategies to manage their personal health information and health care including how to assess personal risk factors and collect, organize, and understand their medical records.

• Identify and encourage specific techniques to partner more effectively with their physicians including how to prepare for doctor visits and hospital stays, research their health questions and concerns, and find a "health buddy" or health partner.

• Implement a simple monitoring system to keep track of mutually agreed upon individualized health and wellness goals and adhere to personal regimens.

• Empower patients to design in partnership with their physicians their own customized preventive health care regimen based on patient-identified goals, including tracking immunizations and seeking necessary preventive tests.

The Women's Forum, an initiative started in 2004 by the Penn Dental Medicine Alumni Society, offers alumni, in particular women, a special networking opportunity for making new connections and identifying new opportunities. Alumni are encouraged to attend the Forum, and participate in the dialogue about how to achieve and maintain a healthy work life balance. We can all benefit from supporting and assisting each other in our careers.

One credit lecture hour is offered to attendees. Penn Dental Medicine is an ADA CERP recognized provider.
