Forensic Dentistry

This lecture will introduce dentists to the protocols and procedures of identifying human remains in a mass disaster. Participants will learn about the dentist's role in a mass disaster, become familiar with forms of identification other than dental, understand the importance of ante-mortem and post-mortem, and become aware of the legal obligations of the practitioner to surrender patient records. These concepts will be illustrated using the World Trade Center collapse and Hurricane Katrina case studies. Information about becoming involved with a mass disaster identification team will be provided along with discussion of various other teams.
