Course Description:

Modern microendodontic surgery has revolutionized traditional endodontic surgery performed with bur preparations and amalgam root-end fillings. Utilizing the microscope, ultrasonic instruments for root-end preparations, and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) for root-end fillings, this modern microscopic approach to apical surgery has resulted in minor postoperative sequelae with over 90% success on teeth with good bone support. Geared toward oral surgeons and general dentists practicing apical surgery, this course will feature both a lecture and a live surgical demonstration on difficult posterior teeth.

Lecture topics will include:

  • The principles and practice of microsurgery.
  • The effective use of microsurgical instruments.
  • A review of the scientific literature on the superior healing and sealing properties of MTA as a root-filling.
  • The use of the microscope in the identification of anatomical details (i.e., isthmuses).
