Course Description:

Staying abreast of current dental research and trends is challenging at best. This program will simplify and deliver the latest research in the field of dental hygiene to enable you to treat your patients. Research that will help both you and your patient control their gingival and/or periodontal disease(s), new AAP classifications that will facilitate recognition and diagnosis of your patients and introduce the latest instruments, technology and utilization of technology to enhance the results of your treatment, will be discussed. The participant will take part in a discussion regarding recent paradigm shifts from the 1999 Symposium, utilization of ultrasonic instrumentation and the role systemic disease plays in determining incidence and rate of progression of periodontal disease.

This course is designed for practitioners who would like to update their current knowledge or who may be returning to the practice of dental hygiene. The clinical hands on portion of the program will utilize Typodents in a 1:5, instructor to student ratio and will include root morphology exercises, traditional hand instrumentation, traditional ultrasonic instrumentation, and instrument sharpening.

Materials needed: Please bring 4-5 dull instruments and protective eyewear for the hands-on participation portion of the program.

This program will enable the participant to:

  • Recognize clinically a multitude of diverse risk factors for periodontal disease manifestation and the role of these risk factors in the incidence of disease expression and rate of progression of periodontal disease.
  • Understand the importance of a comprehensive medical history and utilize the information pertained therein to better treat their patients.
  • Recognize the role of the periodontal co-therapist in recognition, diagnosis, treatment planning, case presentation, treatment acceptance, and "current symptom" as well as "historic disease" maintenance.
  • Understand the new classifications of gingival and periodontal diseases as per the AAP.
  • Review traditional and advanced instrumentation techniques, both manual and automated, to provide a comprehensive and therapeutic debridement.
