Course Description:
|
The prescribing of antibiotics is a routine part of dental practice. However, their overuse has lead to the development of resistant bacterial strains and unnecessary side effects and drug interactions. This course will review the basics of antibiotic pharmacology, emphasizing dosing strategies, important drug interactions, and recent changes in the guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis. This course is geared toward general dentists, specialists, and hygienists.
This course will enable participants to:
- Discuss the mechanism of actions of commonly employed antibiotics in dentistry.
- Identify the cardiovascular conditions where antibiotic prophylaxis is necessary before invasive dental procedures.
- Discuss the evidence supporting and refuting the alleged interaction between antibiotics and oral contraceptives.
- Discuss the common side effects of antibiotics employed in dental medicine.
Discuss the benefits of employing local delivery systems of antibiotics over systemic antibiotics in treating periodontal disease. |
