Dr. Ken Hargreaves received his BA in neurobiology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977, his DDS from Georgetown University in Washington DC in 1983, and his PhD (Physiology) from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda MD in 1986. He completed his residency in Endodontics at the University of Minnesota in 1993 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Hargreaves is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Endodontics, and Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He also maintains a private practice limited to endodontics. His primary research interests are in the areas of pain and inflammation, and he and his research team have published more than 130 papers and two books.
He has received an NIH MERIT Award, two IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards (for Pulp Biology, and for Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics), and the 2007 AAE Louis I. Grossman award. Ongoing basic research includes studies on mechanisms of inflammatory pain and pharmacological regulation of peripheral nociceptors, whilst current clinical trials are evaluating peripheral pain mechanisms in endodontic patients, as well as the clinical outcomes of non-surgical endodontic procedures. His review presentation will include the best evidence for treatment of odontogenic pain using NSAIDs, acetaminophen, opioids, local anesthetics, steroids and other drugs, and the anatomical pathways and physiologic mechanisms involved in odontogenic pain.
