Dedication Celebration Held for New Syngcuk Kim Endodontic Clinic

Philadelphia — Penn Dental Medicine officially dedicated its new Syngcuk Kim Endodontic Clinic with a special celebration on March 1 for alumni, students, faculty, staff, and other friends and supporters. The event included a continuing education program for attendees, an open house of the clinic showcasing its high-tech equipment for clinical care and instruction, a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception, and a dinner at the University Museum.
The new clinic, which opened for patient care on January 7, is the first key project of the School’s 10-year master plan for facilities renovations. This new state-of-the-art facility features 23 operatories, including two surgical suites, all outfitted with high-tech equipment, including operating microscopes with still photo and video capture capabilities, monitors for viewing clinical care as it occurs, digital x-ray units, and computers for accessing digital patient records.
The two surgical suites are also equipped for real-time video streaming of cases to classrooms, continuing education programs, and national and international meetings. Carl Zeiss Meditec outfitted Penn’s new endodontic clinic with ZEISS OPMI® pico or OPMI® PROergo surgical microscopes. Other corporate sponsors that provided much of the state-of-the-art equipment for the clinic are B&L Biotech, Brasseler, and Carestream.
Alumni and friends of the Department of Endodontics contributed more than $2 million to fund this new facility, named in honor of Dr. Syngcuk Kim, the Louis I. Grossman Professor of Endodontics, who has led the Department of Endodontics for nearly 21 years and established the Department as a leader in the integration of the operating microscope into conventional and surgical endodontic education and practice.
The Syngcuk Kim Endodontic Clinic is the teaching clinic for the postdoctoral students in Penn Dental Medicine’s graduate dental education program in endodontics as well as the training center for the Department of Endodontics’ highly respected continuing education programs in microsurgery, which draw clinicians from throughout the world. All Penn Dental Medicine DMD students also rotate through the clinic for their endodontic requirements.
