Philadelphia – Penn Dental Medicine is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Claire Mitchell to the rank of Professor within the School’s Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology; her promotion is effective July 1, 2017.
Dr. Mitchell has been a member of the Penn Dental Medicine faculty since 2009, serving as Associate Professor; and since 2015, she has also held secondary appointments in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Associate Professor of Physiology.
“Dr. Mitchell has made significant contributions to the School’s research and scholarly activity, and as an educator, she has provided outstanding classroom teaching and mentoring to our students, “ said Morton Amsterdam Dean Denis Kinane. “In addition, her leadership in spearheading our alliance with the Monell Chemical Senses Center is further evidence of her commitment to enhancing the eminence of Penn Dental’s research enterprise. She is an invaluable asset to the School.”
Among her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Mitchell serves as Course Director of Integrative Neurosciences and also lectures as part of a variety of other courses at Penn Dental Medicine and Perelman School of Medicine. She is also active in graduate student training and advising, presently mentoring DScD and PhD candidates, and serving on a number PhD thesis committees. In addition, she is a member of Penn’s Pharmacological Graduate Group and the Neuroscience Graduate Group. An active member of academic and institutional committees, she serves on Penn Dental Medicine’s Academic Freedom and Responsibility Committee, DScD Promotions Committee, Library Committee, Committee on Student Advancement, and Ethics Course Committee.
Dr. Mitchell holds four patents for her research, which uses physiological approaches to understand the mechanistic steps of disease. A widely published author, she has been held numerous organizing roles for national and international meeting for the International Society of Eye Research and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and currently serves at Editor, Journal Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
Dr. Mitchell holds a PhD from the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London.
