Philadelphia – Penn Dental Medicine students joined with Temple University dental students and dental hygiene students from Harcum College and Community College of Philadelphia to present the Philly Oral Cancer Walk and 5K on March 29, building awareness of oral cancer and raising funds in support of the Oral Cancer Foundation. This was the sixth year that students in Penn Dental Medicine’s Oral Cancer Society organized the event, and it was the most successful to date. Approximately $19,700 was raised through registration, donations, and other fundraising efforts, and the event drew a total of 250 registered participants from around the Philadelphia area.
Free oral cancer screenings, conducted by Penn Dental Medicine students and faculty and residents from the School’s departments of oral medicine, periodontics, preventive and restoratives sciences, and community health, were also part of the day’s activities along with post-race festivities. Michael White, an oral cancer survivor, was this year’s keynote speaker.
