Leading into Penn Dental Medicine Alumni Weekend 2017, Research Day 2017 will be held May 11, 2017 at Penn Dental Medicine.
The annual Penn Dental Medicine Research Day brings together the School’s basic science and clinical faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, dental students, and research investigators for a day of exchange and collaboration with colleagues across disciplines. The day is an opportunity to showcase the quality, depth and diversity of the School’s research. Penn Dental Medicine Research Day features faculty talks, poster presentations by the students and postdoctoral fellows and poster competition. The latter selects the best research presentations and provides a unique opportunity for selected students and research fellows to attend the annual AADR meeting through travel grants. The AADR travel award program is a school initiative to advance ongoing research and leadership for student and research investigators at Penn Dental Medicine.
Additional highlights of the day:
Joseph L. Rabinowitz Memorial Lecture and Joseph and Josephine L. Rabinowitz Award
Dr. Rabinowitz, professor emeritus of biochemistry in the School of Dental Medicine, was known for his research in lipid and steroid biochemistry which led to the development of important cholesterol lowering drugs knows as statins. He was committed to the advancement of scientific research at Penn Dental Medicine. In 2004, he and his wife endowed the Joseph and Josephine Rabinowitz Award for Excellence in research to promote independent research by junior faculty.
This year, the Joseph L. Rabinowitz Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr. Martha J. Somerman, Director of the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, on the topic “NIDCR: Leading Advances in Oral Health Research and Innovation.” She will highlight exciting new dental, oral, and craniofacial research results, tolls and technology developments and NIDCR’s efforts to address public health concerns.
PDM Research Day Keynote Lecture
The keynote lecture is delivered by an individual outside of Penn Dental Medicine community who exemplifies excellence in cutting edge research. The PDM Research Day 2017 Keynote Lecture will given by Dr. Kam W. Leong, Samuel Y. Sheng Professor, Columbia University and Editor-in-Chief, Biomaterials. Dr. Leong will speak on the topic of transdifferentiation and the development of new and innovative therapeutic applications in bioengineering of direct cellular reprogramming.
