This presentation explores a cell-free regenerative strategy for tongue reconstruction using extracellular vesicles derived from gingival mesenchymal stem cells.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the rationale for using stem cell–derived extracellular vesicles as a cell-free approach to tissue regeneration.
  • Explain how extracellular vesicles combined with biomaterial scaffolds may promote muscle regeneration, angiogenesis, immune modulation, and restoration of specialized tongue structures.
  • Evaluate the potential advantages and translational limitations of cell-free regenerative strategies for reconstruction of complex oral and craniofacial tissues.

James Melville, DDS

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is trending towards tissue engineering modalities and patient specific reconstruction. Whether the surgeon practices in the hospital or in the office, regeneration of hard and soft tissues of the maxillofacial complex is encountered daily. There is a plethora of next generation materials and methods available to surgeons; knowing what method/material to choose when and where can be daunting. This course will provide an evidence-based approach allowing surgeons to optimize materials for state-of-the-art reconstruction.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the science behind bone grafts, tissue-engineering graft and regeneration.
  • Review surgical techniques to optimize bone and nerve regeneration and patient outcomes.
  • Review surgical technique and management of complications.
