Alan Atlas, DMD

Dr. Alan Atlas maintains a private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, specializing in comprehensive and esthetic dentistry. He has served on the faculty of Penn Dental Medicine for more than 28 years and is Clinical Professor of Restorative Dentistry in the Departments of Endodontics and Preventive/Restorative Sciences. He pioneered the integration of the dental microscope into the predoctoral curriculum at Penn Dental and authored a landmark publication on precision restorative microscopy. An internationally recognized lecturer, researcher, innovator, and inventor, Dr. Atlas holds multiple dental-related patents and has presented evidence-based restorative concepts at major conferences, universities, and professional meetings throughout the United States and internationally.

Yu Cheng Chang, DDS, MS, DMD

Dr. Chang is an Associate Professor of Clinical Periodontics at Penn Dental Medicine. He also serves as the Assistant Dean for Emerging Technology in Patient Care and Director of the Periodontics Clinic in the post-graduate program for the Department of Periodontics. In addition, he is Co-Director of Predoctoral Periodontics. Dr. Chang received his DDS from Chun Shan Medical University in Taiwan in 2008. Furthermore, he earned a certificate in Periodontology and a Master’s degree in Oral Biology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2014 and 2015, respectively. He also holds a DMD from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is actively involved in conducting research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Since joining Penn Dental Medicine’s faculty, Dr. Chang’s excellence in teaching has been frequently recognized with multiple awards, such as the Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Educator Award from The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the Award for Outstanding Service for Students, the Nobel Biocare Junior Faculty Fellowship, and the Earle Bank Hoyt Award from Penn Dental Medicine. Dr. Chang, most recently, was awarded the AAP Foundation Teaching Fellowship, a highly competitive fellowship awarded to two individuals nationwide.

Bekir Karabucak, DMD, MS

Dr. Karabucak is Chair, Professor of Endodontics. He is involved with endodontic courses/seminars in pre- and postdoctoral programs. He also runs selective microscope training courses for predoctoral students. After earning his dental degree from Istanbul University School of Dental Medicine in 1993, Dr. Karabucak completed his endodontic postgraduate training at the Department of Endodontics at Penn Dental Medicine in 1998, where he also received his Masters in Oral Biology in 2002. He also earned his DMD degree from Penn Dental Medicine in 2002. His research interests include the cellular mechanisms of vasodilation and the inflammatory mediators in the dental pulp. Dr. Karabucak has been the attending endodontist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since 2005 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Additionally, he has lectured at national and international conferences and also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics.

Nupur Patel, BDS, DMD, MS, FACP

Dr. Nupur Patel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. After completing her training, she taught at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry prior to joining the faculty at Penn. Dr. Patel directs the Graduate Prosthodontics Program at Penn. Additionally; she also teaches pre-doctoral students in the specialty of Prosthodontics. Her research interests include ceramic materials, resin ceramic bonding, digital workflows, and quality of life studies. Dr. Patel has mentored students and residents in their research projects as well as for presentations at local and national conferences. Dr. Patel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics. Dr. Patel currently practices Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics at the Penn Dental Family Practice at Locust Walk.
