Mildred C. Embree, DMD, PhD, MS Named Department of Orthodontics Chair

Philadelphia — Following a national search, Penn Dental Medicine welcomes Mildred C. Embree, DMD, PhD, MS to lead the Department of Orthodontics. Her appointment as Chair and Professor with tenure is effective July 1.

An internationally recognized clinician-scientist, Dr. Embree’s work bridges foundational biomedical research, translational science, and advances in industry and therapeutics within the fields of skeletal biology and orthodontics. She comes to Penn Dental Medicine from Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she has served on the College of Dental Medicine faculty since 2010, most recently as the Dr. Edwin S. Robinson Associate Professor of Dental Medicine, leading an interdisciplinary, federally supported research program in skeletal biology and regenerative medicine and serving as Associate Director of the  Center for Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Dr. Embree earned her DMD and PhD from the Medical University of South Carolina, where her doctoral research included graduate training at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She completed postdoctoral research training in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center College of Dental Medicine, where she also earned her specialty certificate in orthodontics and a Master of Science.

Dr. Embree succeeds Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung, who ended his 14-year term as Chair of the Department of Orthodontics on June 30.  A distinguished leader and valued member of the Penn Dental Medicine community since 1989, Dr. Chung remains part of the Department’s full-time faculty.
