Dr. Mel Mupparapu Receives Penn’s Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching
Dr. Mel Mupparapu, Professor of Oral Medicine, Director of Radiology, and Program Director of the Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Fellowship.
Philadelphia — The University of Pennsylvania has recognized Dr. Mel Mupparapu, Professor of Oral Medicine and Director of Radiology at Penn Dental Medicine, for his excellence in teaching as a recipient of Penn’s 2017 Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Awards for Distinguished Teaching. Penn presents eight Lindback awards each year, divided evenly between health-related disciplines and all other departments and divisions of the University. Award winners are determined by nominations and recommendations made by faculty and students.
Dr. Mupparapu , who has held the position of Professor since 2012, was also part of the School’s faculty from 1996 to 2002, serving as Assistant Professor of Radiology during that time. Since 2014, he also has held the post of Program Director of the Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Fellowship. Active on a variety of levels at Penn Dental Medicine, he is presently a member of the Committee of Full Professors, the Admissions Committee, and the Infection Control Committee.
Dr. Mupparapu lectures within the graduate dental education program and teaches predoctoral DMD students as well. Currently, he teaches the radiology component of four courses; serves as course director for Oral and Maxillofacial Complex IV, and the radiology clinic courses for third- and fourth-year students; and also teaches Radiologic Physics and Technique in Dental Radiology and Auxiliary Utilization Course, Oral and Maxillofacial Anatomy in Biological Systems II, and Radiology of Caries and Periodontal Disease in Oral and Maxillofacial Complex I.
Dr. Mupparapu earned his DMD at Penn Dental Medicine in 1996 through the School’s Program for Advanced Standing Students, and has also held faculty appointments at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. While at Rutgers, he received the Master Educators Guild Award and the Credo in Action Award.

The Lindback Awards were established in 1961 with the help of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. This year’s recipients will be recognized at a University-wide event Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 5-6:30 p.m., Class of ‘49 Auditorium, Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA.
