Penn Dental Medicine Students Receive Oral Health Fair Awards
On April 22, 2010, Penn Dental Medicine and the Vernon J. Brightman Research Society presented the 19th Annual Oral Health Fair in the Robert Schattner Henry Schein Atrium. The annual event celebrates Penn Dental Medicine’s long-standing tradition of excellence in student research. Throughout the year, students perform research with the guidance of faculty mentors and present posters with their findings for members of the Penn Dental Medicine community and a team of independent faculty judges. Fourteen Oral Health Fair Award and five Community Oral Health students competed in the event. The winners include:
Jesse Gardner (D’12) received first place with preceptor Dr. Yan Yuan, Associate Professor of Microbiology, for a poster titled, Host Cellular Proteins as Potential Targets for Antiviral Therapies. Gardner will represent Penn Dental Medicine at the ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program in Orlando, Fl., October 8-10, 2010.
Avi Sher (D’12) was awarded second place with preceptor Dr. Fusun Ozer, Clinical Associate of Restorative Dentistry, for a poster titled, Dentin Bond Strength to Decalcified Root Surfaces. On behalf of the School, Sher will attend at the Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis, Tenn., October 29-31, 2010.
Emial Chen (D’12) received third place with Dr. Yan Yuan, for a poster titled, EBV induced Lymphoma and the Control of Human microRNA by EBV proteins in tumorigenesis. Chen will also attend the Hinman Student Research Symposium.
In addition to the Oral Health Fair Award winners, Angela Lucarini (D’12) was selected as this year’s recipient of the School’s Community Oral Health Award for a project titled, Rock-a-Bye Baby: Safe Sleep Education and SIDS Risk Reduction.
