Course Description

The 65th Annual Alumni Meeting of the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Pennsylvania will be held October 5, 2018, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, at the Union League of Philadelphia. This year’s J. Henry O’Hern, Jr. Alumni Day Lecturewill be delivered by Dr. S. Jay Bowman from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dr. Bowman’s lecture will be a far reaching analysis and encompass facial esthetics, Class II combination therapy, the butterfly system, crossbite corrections, Monkey Hooks, Kilroy Springs, Class II mechanics, distal jet, Invisalign, miniscrews, as well as demineralization stains. These topics and more will be covered in vignettes spread throughout the morning and afternoon. Dr. Bowman will impart details from his experiences to help you determine hype from functionality.

This course will enable participants to:

  • Have an evidence-based understanding of the common controversies of extraction, expansion, and early treatment in orthodontics.
  • Be familiar with the myths and legends involved with miniscrew anchorage.
  • Have been exposed to a wide-range of clinical applications and treatment concepts involving miniscrew anchorage.
  • Have been introduced to new modifications of transpalatal arches combined with miniscrews for all three Angle Classifications.
  • Understand the mechanism of correction of Class IIs.
  • Recognize the similarities and differences among various Class II mechanisms.
  • Recognize methods of improving the predictability of clear aligners.
  • Be able to diagnosis and treat Pseudo Class III mixed dentition malocclusions.
  • Be introduced to some alternatives for handling impacted canines.

Speakers

S. Jay Bowman, DMD, MSD: Dr. S. Jay Bowman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He developed and teaches the Straightwire course at the University of Michigan, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Saint Louis University, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Case Western Reserve University, and Visiting Clinical Lecturer at Seton Hill University and Milton Sims Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaide. Dr. Bowman is a Guest Editor for Seminars in Orthodontics, either a Contributing Editor or on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, Angle Orthodontist, Seminars in Orthodontics, and a member of the Editorial Advisor Board for Orthodontic Products, Orthodontic Practice US,and OrthoTribune. He has over 150 articles published, has contributed to 15 book chapters, and has given over 130 lectures in over 38 U.S. States and 36 countries on 6 continents. He speaks on a wide variety of clinical topics nationally and internationally.
