The BMJ published recommendations based on a linked systematic review and network meta-analysis to apply to patients living with chronic pain (≥3 months duration) associated with TMD as a group of conditions, and do not apply to the management of acute TMD pain.

The World Health Organization (WHO) published this technical document early in 2023. In the Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (2011), the United Nations General Assembly recognized that oral diseases are major global health burdens and share common risk factors with other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

WHO’s Global oral health status report (GOHSR) provides the first-ever comprehensive picture of oral disease burden and highlights challenges and opportunities to accelerate progress towards universal coverage for oral health.

This 2021 report was prepared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the direction of the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. A number of Penn Dental Medicine faculty contributed to the report, including Drs. Michael Glick, Thomas Sollecito, George Hajishengallis, Flavia Teles, Anh Le, and Joseph Fiorellini.
