Description

This CE course will describe the epidemiology of the most common Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities and discuss the challenges of providing high quality dental care to this population due to political, economic, social, and clinical barriers. Best practices for improving and maintaining oral health of individuals with ASD will be discussed, with an emphasis on the role of an effectively collaborating interprofessional healthcare team. Clinical techniques in therapeutic dentistry will be reviewed in a case-based format.

Objectives

• Describe the epidemiology of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
• Understand the challenges and best practices for providing dental care to individuals with IDD.
• Discuss the importance of an interprofessional healthcare team approach for improving the oral health of individuals with IDD.
• Review cases representing unique dental management strategies and techniques in providing dental therapy to individuals with IDD.

Speakers

Lyubov Slashcheva, DDS, MS, FABSCD, is a special needs and geriatric dentist, working at Apple Tree Dental in Rochester, MN. She is also a public health research collaborator with the Mayo Clinic’s Rochester Epidemiology Project. Dr. Slashcheva obtained her undergraduate degree at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she grew up. After obtaining dental training at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia as a National Health Service Corps Dental Scholar, she pursued residency training at the University of Iowa in Geriatric & Special Needs Dentistry and Dental Public Health. Alongside residency training, Dr. Slashcheva participated as a LEND fellow and obtained graduate certificates in biostatistics and global health. She has served on the boards of organizations such as the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, the American Public Health Association (Oral Health Section), the Center for Sustainable Climate Solutions, and the Mennonite Healthcare Fellowship. Alongside her professional endeavors, Dr. Slashcheva is an avid bi-cyclist and enjoys helping on her husband’s vegetable farm and spending time with their three children.
