My Role as Clinician and Educator in Pediatric Dentistry

Course Description

The lecture outlines the current status of pediatric dental education in the United States, goals of dental education with particular emphasis on challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. I will be presenting my teaching philosophy with emphasis on self-directed learning and teaching modalities tailored to the needs of students belonging to Generation Y and Z. This will be presented in a form of case presentation with strategic approach towards a specific teaching and learning methodology. Following this, I will be sharing my contribution in two specific areas of research including Forensic Dentistry & Evidence Based Dentistry. Finally, I will be discussing my potential role in the areas of Innovation, Education, and Research at the UPenn School of Dental Medicine.

The participants will be able to understand different teaching modalities in Pediatric Dentistry with particular emphasis on self-directed learning.

Speaker

Dr. Jayakumar Jayaraman is a Pediatric Dentist with clinical and research training from India, Hong Kong and England. Dr. Jayaraman received his Diploma in Pediatric Dentistry and Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom where he also serves as an Examiner. For the past 10 years he has taught Pediatric Dentistry and supervised research projects for pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and PhD students in different countries. His research involves topics in Evidence-Based Dentistry, Forensic Dentistry, Human Biology & Anthropology. Dr. Jayaraman has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles and reviewed articles for several leading pediatric, forensic, and multi-disciplinary journals. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Frontiers in Dental Medicine Journal and an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Jayaraman is currently completing his second residency in Pediatric Dentistry and MS degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
