Course Description
This lecture will describe the different giant cell containing lesions which occur in the jaws and their possible relationship to each other, particularly in the light of recent genomic studies. Current management of the Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the jaws will be described in detail paying particular emphasis on recent medical treatments including intralesional steroids, calcitonin, alpha interferon, bisphosphonates, and denosumab. The advantages, disadvantages, and treatment results of each will be described.

- To enable the attendee to become familiar with the different types of giant cell containing lesions found in the jaws.
- To enable the attendee to understand the pathophysiology and treatment modalities available, both medical and surgical, for these lesions.
Speaker
M. Anthony (Tony) Pogrel, D.D.S., M.D., F.R.C.S., F.A.C.S., received his dental degree in 1967 from Liverpool University in England and his medical degree from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1974. He then received further general surgery training and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in Great Britain, Holland and Miami, Florida. In 1979, he was appointed consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Peterborough and Cambridge in England and since 1983, has been on the full-time faculty of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a former chairman of the department and is currently a professor. Dr. Pogrel holds both medical and dental licenses in California and is board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International and American Associations of Dental Research and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Dr. Pogrel has more than 200 publications in the literature on a variety of topics and is a frequent presenter at specialty meetings nationally and internationally.
