Genetically Related Oligodontia


Most of the patients treated in the perio-prosth department require comprehensive dental treatments due to caries, periodontal disease or parafunction. Another etiology for comprehensive treatments are oral-maxillofacial cancers or trauma. However, a small, often overlooked group of patients, require comprehensive treatments for a different reason altogether – genetically related dental abnormalities. In essence, they are dentally disabled. These patients are born with very deficient dentitions that effect function, esthetic, facial growth and self-esteem.

What makes these patients different from other patients? Clearly, they require comprehensive and challenging dental solutions from a very young age. Furthermore, uncovering the etiology of their condition provides multiple benefits: It provides the patient with the psychological relief that comes with an accurate diagnosis, at times it allows preventing severe medical complications, it can be leveraged to aid in financial support and advance care for their families and similar cases.

  • Understand how genetic mutations effect the dentition.
  • Discuss how and why we should diagnose patients with genetically related dental abnormalities.
  • Review age based treatment options for patients with oligodontia.


Shaked Navat Pelli, DMD is a senior resident at the Periodontal-Prosthesis Post-graduate residency at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. During her residency Dr. Navat Pelli received training in both periodontics and prosthodontics and provided comprehensive dental treatments for patients requiring complex full mouth reconstructions from the smile-design stage, through periodontal surgeries to final prosthesis. Her focus was on treating patients with genetically related dental abnormalities. In this capacity she established a collaboration with Penn Genetic Department to diagnose, research and treat a growing number of patients of this unique population.

Dr. Navat Pelli received her DMD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where she also completed the Advanced General Practitioner Program in the Department of Prosthodontics (with honors).

Prior to joining Penn, Dr. Navat Pelli gained varied clinical experience in Israel and the United States and served as a clinical instructor in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Dr. Navat Pelli has varied research interests. At Penn, she is conducting research into epigenetics in epithelial cells of gingival tissues. At Forsyth Institute, she conducted research studying the protective effect of resolvin (ERV1) from periodontitis in mice and mass-spectrometry of salivary proteome in Rheumatoid Arthritis in Dr. Van-Dyke’s lab. In Harvard Dental School she conducted a project, led by Dr. Kalenderian, to evaluate the benefit of using accurate dental diagnostic terminology in electronic health records.

Reconstruction of Worn Dentition


In this lecture a case of worn dentition and the treatment approach will be discussed, which includes a comprehensive full mouth rehabilitation to restore compromised esthetics, occlusion, and loss of vertical dimension in order to reach the goals of an ideal stable outcome.
