Course Description

Ever since N. Lang stated that as a profession we are witnessing a “Tsunami of Peri-implantitis” in 2005, we have been searching for answers. However, we also have failed to discover the necessary questions. What are the entities of Peri-Implant Mucocitis and Peri-Implantitis? How do these disease processes arise and are there precipitating factors? The greatest question is perhaps, how do we treat these effected implants in a predictable and approachable manner or does such a therapy actually exist?

A thorough discussion will develop a better understanding of these two disease entities, their similarities and differences. Additionally, risk factors and evidence supported findings related to this peri-implant disease entity will be identified. Contemporary therapies and their predictability for success will be deliberated upon.

Learning Objectives

  • A review of the 2018 AAP Classification of Periodontitis and specifically Peri-Implant diseases
  • Assess various risk factors associated with this disease entity/these disease entities.
  • Describe multiple therapeutic modalities which have been proposed in the treatment of peri-implant diseases.
