Description

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a topical treatment to prevent and arrest dental caries, is used in the majority of US and Canadian pediatric dentistry practices and training programs. Its use is growing among general dental practices for the care of older adults and those with special health care needs. It was cleared by the FDA in 2014, went on the market in the US in 2015, and received a CDT code for caries arrest in 2016. It is widely applied by dental hygienists. In this lecture, participants will learn how the standard of care is changing and about the process involved in effecting the change.

Educational Objectives

• To understand the rationale, clinical application, and limitations of silver diamine fluoride for prevention and arrest of dental caries lesions across the age spectrum.
• To gain knowledge of the regulatory process for silver diamine fluoride in the US.
• To learn about the adoption of CDT codes and acceptance by insurers.

Speaker

Dr. Peter Milgrom is Emeritus Professor of Oral Health Sciences and Pediatric Dentistry in the School of Dentistry and adjunct Professor of Health Services in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. He is author of 5 books and over 325 scientific articles and recipient of many honors. In 2008, he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bergen, Norway. In 2012, he was awarded the Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research by the American Dental Association and appointed to the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs. Dr. Milgrom’s clinical focus has been on the care of fearful and mentally ill patients.
