Course Description

This presentation will focus on understanding taste and smell as an informed clinician: why does an oral healthcare provider needs to know about taste and smell, how does it work and what happens if one or both sensory systems malfunction? The presentation will include two practical demonstrations on the importance of smell in taste and on how sweet taste works. Further, it will cover the most common reasons for chemo sensory disorders.

Andrew I. Spielman, DMD, PhD, Cert. OMFS, Cert. Hist. Med. Faculty at NYU College of Dentistry since 1989. Professor and Chair (Interim) Dept. of Basic Sciences. Author of 125 publications, editor/author of several books. Recipient of three teaching awards, member of Committee on Integrated National Board Dental Examination and former Chair of the Joint Commission on NDBE.
