The Office of Faculty Advancement and Diversity at Penn Dental Medicine is committed to enhancing both the diversity of the School’s faculty and the quality of academic life, providing mentoring and opportunities for professional development. Our intiatives are outlined in the action plan document:

The Director of Faculty Advancement and Diversity:

  • Oversees all faculty recruitment efforts, to ensure outreach to a broad applicant pool and unbiased assessment of candidates.
  • Oversees and expand the Penn Dental Mentoring Program (Faculty Mentoring Guidelines).
  • Ensures that Penn Dental Medicine faculty members have access to opportunities for professional development regarding teaching, grant and manuscript writing and networking opportunities.

Workshops for Creating a Respectful Work Environment

In conjunction with the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, the Associate Dean for Academic Policies, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of Student Diversity Initiatives, we have created a customized training plan for faculty and staff. Examples of recent events include:

  • Faculty Development Program (November 2012): Presentations and interactive workshops by staff from the Center for Teaching and Learning on “Clinical Teaching in a Multicultural Environment.”
  • Goldin Seminar (February 2013): Ezekiel Emanuel (Vice Provost for Global Initiatives) presented information regarding the effects of the Affordable Care Act on dental education, particularly recruiting and retaining diverse students and faculty, as well as maintaining a diverse patient population.
  • Promoting a Respectful Community at Penn Dental Medicine: An Interactive Workshop (June 2013). This interactive workshop used vignettes portrayed by student actors to discuss key issues of respect, inclusion and diversity at Penn Dental Medicine.
  • A Conversation: Inclusion, Equality and LGBT Issues in Dental Care (December 2013): This panel discussion was sponsored jointly by Penn Dental Medicine, the Office of Affirmative action and Equal Opportunity Programs, and the LGBT Center.
  • A Town Hall Meeting: LBGTQ Inclusion and Equality (March 2014): This panel discussion was sponsored jointly by AMALGAM (A Mixture of Allies, Lesbians, Gays, And More! – Penn Dental Medicine’s LGBTQ organization), the Office of Diversity Affairs, the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs and the LGBT Center.
  • Best Practices: Developing Exceptional Faculty at Penn Dental Medicine (March 2014): This program, designed in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning, featured interactive sessions on topics including cultural diversity and conflict resolution.

Faculty Development Resources

Center for Teaching and Learning

The Center for Teaching and Learning promotes teaching excellence at the University of Pennsylvania. For instructors at all levels — from senior faculty to teaching assistants — CTL offers individual teaching consultations, workshops, and discussions in which instructors talk with and learn from each other.

ADEA Emerging Academic Leaders

Many current leaders in academic dentistry are alumni of the AADS Summer Program Career Development for Faculty Leaders: An Immersion Workshop. ADEA has recreated and refreshed this well-regarded program for junior faculty members, whether joining faculty after a residency or after private practice. This three and half day program covers topics such as leadership styles, team building and time management that are essential to planning and implementing a successful academic career.

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine

ELAM’s year-long program develops the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today’s complex healthcare environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. Nearly 700 senior women leaders have participated in the program since 1995. ELAM alumnae make up 25 percent of the executive positions in academic medicine and dentistry that are held by women.

Networking Resources

Penn Forum for Women Faculty

The Forum for Women Faculty was conceived and developed by women faculty across all twelve schools at Penn, with support from the Office of the Provost and the Trustees Council of Penn Women, to build a community of women scholars that enriches the University. The Forum provides networking and skills-building opportunities and advocates for policies promoting equity for women faculty.

FOCUS on Health and Leadership for Women

FOCUS is a program at the Perelman School of Medicine designed to improve the recruitment, retention, advancement and leadership of women faculty. It offers numerous workshops, including a Lunchtime Seminar series exploring a broad range of topics, including faculty development.

Penn’s Women’s Center

The mission of Penn’s Women’s Center is to understand and address the evolving needs of all women at the University of Pennsylvania, redress gender inequity and, in so doing, support and advance women’s personal and professional development and empower them to reach their fullest potential.

LBGT Center

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center at Penn, one of the oldest and most active programs of its kind in the country, supports Penn lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, staff, alumni, and faculty and increases the general Penn community’s understanding and acceptance of its sexual and gender minority members. Established in 1982, the Center provides a variety of services throughout the year for and concerning Penn’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

University of Pennsylvania Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty manages appointments and promotions; supports University initiatives to enhance faculty recruitment and retention; provides resources, policies, and information; collaborates with peer institutions on important initiatives for faculty; and advances Penn’s commitment to gender and minority equity for faculty. Additionally, the Office also maintains the Handbook for Faculty and Academic Administrators.

University of Pennsylvania Office of the Vice Provost for Research

In order to provide comprehensive services to researchers throughout the University, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research coordinates the Office of Research Services, Office of Regulatory Affairs, University Laboratory Animal Resources, Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety, and the Center for Technology Transfer. Additionally, this office provides information regarding funding services and research opportunities; intramural funding for members of the Penn community; coordination of the grant application; selection and competition process; and a variety of other functions.

Perleman School of Medicine Faculty Affairs and Professional Development Office

This site contains information relevant to all current and prospective health science faculty. Topics include research activities, scientific writing, career management, teaching effectiveness, and technology training.
