Dr. Stephen Abel has had a distinguished career in the field of oral health and currently serves as a faculty member at the Center of Integrative Global Oral Health with an academic appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Abel earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from New York University and completed a dental residency program at the Eastman Dental Center. He further enhanced his expertise with a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) and specialized training in periodontics at the University of Minnesota.
Before joining Penn Dental Medicine in 2023, Dr. Abel held significant positions in other academic institutions. From 2013 to 2021, he was the Associate Dean for Students, Community and Professional Initiatives at the State University of New York, University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Prior to this, he served as a Professor of Periodontics and Associate Dean for Extramural Affairs at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine from 2005 to 2013.
A major focus of Dr. Abel’s work has been addressing oral health disparities, particularly through the development of dental programs for underserved communities. He has led two significant projects funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), focusing on expanding dental care to individuals with disabilities and victims of intimate partner violence. His efforts in the field of HIV/AIDS are notable, having received multiple grants and awards from the HIV AIDS Bureau at HRSA. These grants have supported both direct care of persons with HIV and training of dental students in managing oral health issues associated with HIV.
In addition to his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Abel is a prolific author. He has written numerous monographs, publications, and training materials focusing on the oral health management of medically complex patients and the integration of medical screenings in dental settings.
Dr. Abel’s contributions to the field extend to advocacy and policy. He was the first dentist to serve on the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS during the Clinton Administration. Currently, he is a member of the Santa Fe Group, a think tank dedicated to improving lives through advancements in oral health. His career is marked by a commitment to transforming oral health education, service, and practice, making significant strides in bridging gaps in care and knowledge in the oral health field.
