Philadelphia – More than 550 attendees representing 20 countries attended the 5th International Congress on Adhesive Dentistry (IAD), hosted by Penn Dental Medicine June 14 -15. This was the first time the Congress was held in the United States, with Dr. Markus Blatz, Chair and Professor of Preventive and Restorative Sciences at Penn Dental Medicine, serving as the President of the 5th IAD and head of the organizing committee.

The two-day program brought together clinicians, researchers, and the dental industry to discuss the state-of-the-art in adhesive technologies and resin bonding, which provide the foundation for less invasive and more esthetic dental restorations. Day one of the scientific program addressed the history, current state, and future of dental adhesion with day two focusing on adhesive restorative materials and treatment options. The program also included a scientific corporate forum, where industry leaders discussed their latest innovations and developments.

“Adhesive dentistry has fundamentally altered and literally transformed our field toward significantly less invasive, more esthetic, and longer-lasting dental restorations,” says Dr. Blatz. “In addition, adhesive technologies and resin bonding have vastly expanded clinical treatment options and become key elements of almost every specialty area in modern dentistry. The fast-paced clinical improvements, scientific discoveries, and industry developments are simply fascinating, and we are just beginning to understand the impact adhesive dentistry has on the future of our profession. The wealth of knowledge shared during the Congress was tremendous.”

A total of 107 peer-reviewed scientific and clinical poster presentations on all aspects of adhesive dentistry were also part of the Congress, with scientific awards presented to the winning posters selected by members from the IAD Scientific Advisory Board.

Proceedings of the Congress and the abstracts accepted for presentation will be published in a special supplement issue of the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry this fall.

This gathering also offered a forum for the founding meeting of The International Academy for Adhesive Dentistry, a new international organization and information platform to foster the benefits of adhesive and minimally invasive dentistry among researchers, dentist, dental students, the dental industry, and the patients.

The program sponsors included Kuraray; Shofu; 3M ESPE; Dentsply-Caulk; GC Corporation; Sun Medical Co.; BISCO Dental Products, Inc.; Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc.; Tokuyama Dental Corporation; DMG Dental Material Gesellschaft mbH; Ultradent; Danville Materials; and GlasSpan; with publishing partners Aegis Publications LLC and Quintessence Publishing Co.
