Penn Dental Medicine Hosts Workshop for Prospective Students

Thirty-four undergraduate students from more than 20 colleges and universities came to learn about Penn Dental Medicine and opportunities within the dental field

Philadelphia – Thirty-four undergraduate students from more than 20 colleges and universities came to learn about Penn Dental Medicine and opportunities within the dental field as part of a special daylong predental workshop, held June 8. The program was organized collaboratively by the School’s Admissions Office, Offices of Academic Affairs and Student Life, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations and was sponsored by Henry Schein Corporation and Henry Schein Cares.

“Our goal for the day was to bring together a diverse group of students considering entry into dental school and give them the opportunity to meet with some of our current students, faculty, and graduates and gain a better understanding of careers within dentistry and the opportunities at Penn Dental,” says Dr. Beverley Crawford, Director of Diversity and Inclusion. “We wanted to demonstrate the inclusivity of Penn Dental Medicine as well as provide information about affording the cost of dental school.”

The day opened with keynote speaker, Dr. Daniel Richardson (D’02, MD’05), an alumnus of Penn Dental Medicine, who now practices oral surgery in Maryland. He talked about his path into dental medicine and his time at Penn Dental Medicine, sharing his experiences growing up in Canada, his mentors, and the different areas of specialization in the dental profession.

In addition, participants got to experience a bit of dental instruction with The Impressions Program hands-on sessions. These sessions in the School’s preclinical lab and advanced simulation lab were organized and coordinated by the Penn Dental Medicine chapter of the Student National Dental Association. The day also included tours of the School and an opportunity to ask questions of students and alumni at a lunchtime panel discussion. Faculty and staff from the Offices of Student Life, Admissions and Academic Affairs also presented an overview of “why Penn Dental Medicine,” and attendees gained advice on financing their education as well.

“We were pleased with the feedback from participants,” notes Dr. Crawford. “Meeting and talking to current dental students who pursued dentistry via a path similar to their own it a vital part of inspiring undergraduate students to do the same.”
