Dr. Rodrigo Neiva to Lead Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Periodontics as New Chairman
Philadelphia – Following a nationwide search for the leadership post for the School’s Department of Periodontics, Penn Dental Medicine is pleased to welcome Rodrigo Neiva, DDS, MS, to the faculty as Chairman of the Department of Periodontics. His appointment is effective September 1, 2019, pending the approval of the appropriate School of Dental Medicine committees, the University’s Provost Staff Conference and the trustees.
“We are thrilled to have Rodrigo joining the Penn Dental Medicine family,” says Morton Amsterdam Dean Mark Wolff. “He brings great experience as a clinician, researcher, and educator to this leadership role, and we believe he will continue to build on the Department’s history and reputation for excellence.”
Dr. Neiva comes to Penn Dental Medicine from the University of Florida College of Dentistry, where since 2010, he has served as the Graduate Program Director in the Department of Periodontology. After joining the University of Florida in 2010 as Clinical Associate Professor, he was promoted to Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontology in 2017. Prior to his time at University of Florida, Dr. Neiva was on the faculty of University of Michigan School of Dentistry from 2000 to 2010, advancing within the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine to the position of Clinical Associate Professor.
Throughout his time at both the University of Florida and University of Michigan, Dr. Neiva actively mentored and advised a host of master’s degree student candidates. He has been recognized for his distinguished teaching with numerous awards, including the American Academy of Periodontology Educator Award in 2016 and 2006. Dr. Neiva is a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American College of Dentists. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and of the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
Dr. Neiva is active within organized dentistry. He is presently the Board Director and a Board Examiner for the American Board of Periodontology and is a member of its Oral Exam Committee as well. He also serves on the In-Service Examination Committee of the American Academy of Periodontology. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Periodontology, the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, and the International Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Implants. He is widely published in the field of periodontics and oral implantology, is active in clinical research related to bone and soft tissue augmentation, as well as novel techniques in implant and periodontal therapy. He is a frequent national and international lecturer on a variety of topics.
Dr. Neiva holds a DDS from Vale do Itajai University, Itajai, Brazil (1997) and earned his MS (2004) and certificate in periodontics (2003) at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
