Dr. Marco Tizzano Named Associate Professor of Basic & Translational Sciences

 

Dr. Marco Tizzano

Philadelphia – Adding to the depth of Penn Dental Medicine’s research enterprise, Dr. Marco Tizzano has been appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Basic & Translational Sciences. His appointment to this tenure track post was effective October 1.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tizzano to this new position,” says Penn Dental Medicine’s Morton Amsterdam Dean, Dr. Mark S. Wolff. “He brings an active research portfolio and a strong network of collaborators across disciplines both within Penn and beyond.”

Dr. Tizzano comes to Penn Dental Medicine from the Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, where he had been an assistant member since 2015. Already familiar with Penn Dental Medicine, Dr. Tizzano was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School’s Department of Basic & Translational Sciences (formerly the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology) since 2017, teaching taste and smell neuroscience. Prior to his time at Monell, Dr. Tizzano was a faculty member within the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora (2011-2015).

Among his current research projects are one NIDRC-funded grants on “the role of solitary chemosensory cells in periodontal homeostasis” and one NIDCD-funded grants on “the role of solitary chemosensory cells in irritant avoidance and protection of olfactory sensation.”

Dr. Tizzano holds a PhD in congenital metabolic physiopathology from the University of Verona (2003-2007) and earned his BS/MS in biotechnology there as well (1995-2002).
