Dr. Peter Greco Recognized by American Board of Orthodontics
Philadelphia – Dr. Peter Greco, Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at Penn Dental Medicine, has been recognized by The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) with the 2024 Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award – the ABO’s highest honor.
Created by the ABO in 1936, this award is presented annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics. This year’s award was presented in May at the ABO awards reception held in conjunction with the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session in New Orleans, La.
Dr. Greco recently completed his 40th year on the faculty at Penn Dental Medicine. He is also the attending orthodontist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he is an adjunct instructor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He serves on the faculty of the Einstein Medical Center Department of Orthodontics as well and maintains a private practice in Philadelphia and Ardmore, Pa.
Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics since 1989, Dr. Greco was elected to the ABO board of directors in 2002 and served as ABO president in 2009-2010. He continues as an ABO examiner. The ABO presented him with the Earl E. and Wilma S. Shepard Distinguished Service Award in 2018.
A member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists Eastern Component, Dr. Greco served as Angle Society president from 2019-2021 and has been a member of the board of directors since 2011. He received the Society’s Distinguished Service Award in 2019.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, and is a member of the American Society of Dental Ethics. He also is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. He also has held leadership roles in the University of Pennsylvania Orthodontic Alumni Society.
Dr. Greco is an associate editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and authors a monthly column entitled “Ethics in Orthodontics.” He also is an editorial board member of the “Issues in Dental Ethics” section within the Journal of the American College of Dentists. He has contributed to three orthodontic textbooks and authored or co-authored over 165 journal articles or editorials.
Dr. Greco earned his DMD at Penn Dental Medicine in 1979 and obtained his certificate in orthodontics here as well in 1984. The Penn Dental Medicine Alumni Society recognized Dr. Greco with its annual Alumni Award of Merit in 2019.
On being chosen for the Ketcham Award, Dr. Greco said, “When I learned I was named for this award, my immediate thought was that this award truly belongs to those faculty members around the world who have instilled a reverence for excellence among our specialty. In so doing, they uphold a living legacy of the father of the ABO, Dr. Albert H. Ketcham.”
