Endodontics Study Receives JOE Publications Award for Top Clinical Research

Philadelphia – A paper by faculty within Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Endodontics is being recognized by the Journal of Endodontics (JOE) as the journal’s best clinical research publication in 2017. The article, titled A Comparison of Two- and Three-dimensional Healing Assessment after Endodontic Surgery Using CBCT Volumes or Periapical Radiographs appeared in the July 2017 issue of the JOE.

Dr. Frank Setzer, Assistant Professor of Endodontics, was the senior author of the publication, with Dr. Meetu Kohli, Clinical Associate Professor of Endodontics, a contributing author, along with Drs. Tom Schloss, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Endodontics, and David Sonntag of Germany.

The study introduced a precise method of volumetric analysis for the assessment of healing after endodontic microsurgery. This allowed for the comparative evaluation of periapical radiography with three-dimensional CBCT imaging for the exact appraisal and clarification of healing patterns traditionally labeled as incomplete or uncertain, which is significant for endodontic outcome assessment and the treatment planning of failed endodontic cases.

The JOE Publication Awards are presented to authors of published papers in the JOE that represent innovative thought and significant advances in the endodontic field. The JOE Publication Awards are presented annually in the categories of Basic Research: Biology, Basic Research: Technology, Case Reports/Clinical Techniques, Clinical Research, and Regenerative Endodontics.

The awards will be presented at the Scientific Advisory Board Reception during the American Association of Endodontist annual meeting, to be held April 25-28, 2018 in Denver.
