Course Description
Please join us on November 20 for the 2nd Annual Penn OMFS Alumni & Friends Lecture. This year’s program “Anesthesia in OMFS: Looking Back and Leaping Forward” will feature Alan S. Shaw, DDS and Brian P. Ford, DMD, MD, FACS.
Anesthesia has been central to the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) since its inception. This year’s program, “Anesthesia in OMFS: Looking Back and Leaping Forward,” will trace the evolution of office-based anesthesia from its early pioneers to the innovations shaping the specialty’s future. Dr. Alan S. Shaw will explore the historical milestones and key figures who advanced safe and effective in-office anesthetic techniques throughout the 20th century, while Dr. Brian P. Ford will examine emerging pharmacologic agents, monitoring technologies, and educational advances that are redefining anesthesia delivery in OMS. Together, these presentations will offer a comprehensive perspective-honoring the foundations of anesthesia in oral surgery while preparing practitioners for the next generation of care.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Appreciate the historical development of office-based anesthesia and recognize the contributions of early innovators in OMS anesthesia.
- Understand the clinical capabilities and safety principles that underpin effective office-based anesthesia practices.
- Describe recent advances in pharmacology, monitoring technologies, and training that enhance anesthesia safety and efficacy.
- Evaluate current trends and evolving standards in OMS anesthesia delivery, including simulation-based training and regulatory considerations.
- Anticipate future directions in anesthesia innovation and the role of OMS in advancing patient-centered anesthesia care.
