Course Description

This blended AAOMS-approved equivalency course provides oral and maxillofacial surgeons with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for safe and effective airway management in the office-based environment. The course consists of an online module (4 hours) and a hands-on module (2 hours) and will cover the following:

Online Lecture Module:
  • Anatomy and physiology of the airway
  • Patient selection and risk assessment, including considerations for pediatric, geriatric, and obese patients
  • Patient monitoring, including EKG interpretation and capnography
  • Supplemental oxygen sources and delivery systems
  • Techniques for maintaining an open airway
  • Bag-valve-mask (BVM) ventilation: one- and two-person methods for simple and complex airways
  • Use of adjunctive airway devices: oral/nasal pharyngeal airways, endotracheal tubes, LMA/iGel, AirTraq
  • Recognition and management of laryngospasm (partial and complete)
Hands-On Training Module:
  • Instructor demonstration and guided practice using adjunctive airway devices
  • Simulation-based scenarios, including laryngospasm and airway complications in morbidly obese patients
  • Application of the OMS airway algorithm to office-based practice
  • Team-based approach to Office-Based Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM)
  • Review of real-world airway cases and discussion of management and outcomes

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the airway and apply this knowledge to patient management.
  2. Identify high-risk patient populations and implement appropriate airway management strategies.
  3. Interpret patient monitoring data, including EKG and capnography, to recognize early signs of airway compromise.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in maintaining an open airway and performing BVM ventilation.
  5. Select and effectively use adjunctive airway devices in a simulated clinical setting.
  6. Recognize, prevent, and manage laryngospasm and other airway emergencies.
Integrate the OMS airway algorithm and a team-based approach to improve safety in office-based anesthesia
