Meet fellow Penn Dental Medicine graduates, share memories of your time at Penn Dental, and hear how your alma mater is shaping the future of care in 2023.

The number of people worldwide living with some form of disability tops 1 billion, and the number one health need for persons with disabilities is adequate oral care. This has prompted urgent action by dental educators to ensure dental students have adequate training in managing care for persons with disabilities. This year’s Shames Lecture will feature two nationally renowned experts – Marc Ackerman, DMD, MBA, FACD (D’98) and Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, RDH, PhD, FSCHD (DH’82) – along with Gabby Ciancimino (D’24), a current DMD students, and Dean Mark Wolff who will speak about how this curriculum is being implemented and how alumni can participate in this paradigm shift.

Grab your class flag before heading down to the parade. We will depart the School at 11:30 AM to line up for the University’s Alumni Parade on Locust Walk. You are invited to walk with us from the School or meet us on Locust Walk in the designated Professional School line-up area.

Display your Penn pride by marching with Dean Mark Wolff, Alumni Society President Dr. Scott Chanin (D’83), and fellow alumni to the Penn Dental Medicine picnic on Hill Square. Family, friends and children are welcome!

Please note we will depart the School at 11:30 AM to line up for the Parade on Locust Walk. You are invited to walk with us from the School or meet us on Locust Walk in the designated Professional School line-up area.

12:30 – 3:30 PM Penn Dental Medicine Alumni Picnic
Hill Square 

Join fellow alumni for a celebratory picnic lunch at the Penn Dental Medicine tent on Hill Square! This is a great opportunity to bring your entire family as activities will be available for kids of all ages as well as entertainment including a DJ and performances by the Glee Club and Penn Band. Vegetarian and Kosher meals will be available.

*Cost: $40 per person pre-registration/$45 after May 1; $15 children ages 6-16; no charge for children 5 and under

12:30 – 3:30 PM Fun Zone 

We invite children of all ages to enjoy arts, crafts, and entertainment throughout campus at our various Fun Zone locations!

At the Source: A Courbet Landscape Rediscovered 

Join fellow alumni for a curated tour of the Arthur Ross Gallery’s exhibit At the Source: A Courbet Landscape Rediscovered featuring a Gustave Courbet painting and several other works that are part of the Thomas W. Evans collection at the School.

4:00 – 6:00 PM Quaker Kids 

Bring the whole family to paint the campus Red and Blue! Stop by after the Picnic for great treats, fun activities and a screening of a movie! Most appropriate for children ages ten and under.

Research Day 2023
Wednesday, May 10 | 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
This year, in conjunction with Alumni Weekend, the School is pleased to offer additional opportunities for alumni to experience the breadth of research activities at Penn Dental Medicine. Research Day will highlight basic and clinical research excellence at the School including featured faculty talks, poster presentations by students and postdoctoral fellows, and a poster competition.

Advances in Clinical Care & Education Day (ACCE)
Thursday, May 11 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
ACCE Day will celebrate faculty, resident and student scholarship in community service, educational initiatives, and advances in clinical care. In addition to a keynote speaker, the day’s program will include faculty, resident, and student presentations and will highlight Penn Dental Medicine’s Personalized Care Suite within its Care Center for Persons with Disabilities.

At the Source: A Courbet Landscape Rediscovered
February 4 – May 28, 2023
An exhibition sparked by the discovery of a Gustave Courbet painting of the source of the French river Lison in the University of Pennsylvania’s collection, At the Source: A Courbet Landscape Rediscovered (February 4 – May 28, 2023) showcases the infamous painter’s modern landscape practice. Focusing on the motifs of grottos and waterfalls in his art of the 1850s and 1860s, the exhibition highlights the newly re-discovered Courbet painting, not shown in public for close to 100 years, emphasizing the process of authenticating and conserving this historic work.
