San Francisco — Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung, Chauncey M. F. Egel Endowed Chair and Program Director of the Postdoctoral Orthodontic Program at Penn Dental Medicine, was recently installed as secretary-treasurer of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). He and the other new officers were inducted at the ABO President’s Dinner, held in conjunction with the 2015 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) that took place in San Francisco, Calif, May 15- 19. The other officers of the ABO are Dr. Eladio DeLeon Jr. of Augusta, Ga., president; and Dr. Steven Dugoni of San Francisco, Calif., president-elect. Dr. Paul Castelein of Princeton, Ill., is the immediate past president.

The ABO is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and sponsored by the AAO. Board certification is a process by which an individual orthodontist is voluntarily examined by his/her peers as to orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. The passage of the examination process is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.

Each ABO director represents one of the eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an eight-year term, which culminates in the position of the president. The ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy with regard to the board certification of specialists in orthodontics. During his tenure as an ABO director, Dr. Chung has represented the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists. He will serve as secretary-treasurer for one year and next year will be president-elect.

“Working with the ABO means a lot to me,” says Dr. Chung. “It has been my honor to work with a group of dedicated people at the ABO who have the same goal to elevate the standards of orthodontic care for the patient and to protect the public. To me, it means integrity, excellence, and service above self.”

Dr. Chung serves as Chair of the ABO’s Written Examination Committee and is a member of the Marketing/PR/Branding Committee, the Legal Committee, and the Certification Growth/Advocacy Committee. He is also the ABO’s liaison to the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In addition, he is a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and a consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
