Philadelphia — The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) has installed Dr. Chun-Hsi Chung, the Chauncey M. F. Egel Endowed Chair of Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Orthodontics, as president-elect of the ABO. The installation of officers took place during the Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), held in Orlando, Fla., in May.

Each ABO director represents one of the eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an eight-year term, which culminates in the position of president. During his tenure as an ABO director, Dr. Chung has represented the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists. The ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy with regard to the board certification of specialists in orthodontics.

“Serving on The American Board of Orthodontics as a director has been an honor and an extremely rewarding experience for me,” says Dr. Chung. “I have had the privilege of working with a group of fine and dedicated people at the ABO, who all share the same goal of elevating the standards of orthodontic care for the patient. For the coming year, I look forward to working closely with the present and past directors, advocates and orthodontic educators in promoting board certification for orthodontic residents and practitioners.”

Dr. Chung, who has been board certified since 2002, serves as chair of the ABO’s Written Examination Committee and is a member of the Policy Committee. He is the ABO’s liaison to the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In addition, he is serving on the planning committee for the 2018 AAO Annual Session, which will be held in Washington, D.C. He is the co-‐chair of the Doctors’ Program for this upcoming Annual Session. He is also a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and is a consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Founded in 1929, the ABO was the first specialty board in dentistry. It is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the AAO. Board certification is a process by which an individual orthodontist is voluntarily examined by his/her peers as to orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. The passage of the examination process is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.

This year’s other officers of the ABO are Dr. Steven Dugoni of South San Francisco, Calif., president, and Dr. Larry Tadlock of Colleyville, Texas, secretary-‐treasurer. Dr. Eladio DeLeon Jr. of Augusta, Ga., is the immediate past president.
