Standard Deviation

Measures of central tendency, like a mean, is a way to summarize data from a sample to describe where the middle of the data or scores lie. However, it is not possible to know if the scores that contributed to their calculation are similar on average to the mean or not. Watch this video to learn how the spread of scores around the mean can be conveyed with a standard deviation.

In this podcast episode, we welcome back our special guest, Olivia Urquhart, who is a faculty member at Penn Dental Medicine’s Center for Integrative Global Oral Health as well as an epidemiologist by training. Along with her professional background, Olivia also has a passion for biostatistics.

During this discussion, Olivia will expand upon the topic of Standard Deviation alongside one of our hosts, Dr. Alonso Carrasco-Labra. Olivia and Alonso have a very enlightening conversation including common misconceptions with standard deviation, how it relates to other terms we often hear in statistics, and how we can apply this concept on a day-to-day basis.
