Coming to the State of Florida in 2024!

This 1 ½ day program is designed to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to provide accessible and high-quality dental care to individuals with developmental disabilities, ultimately improving their oral health and overall well-being. The program consists of one full day of engaging lectures and a half-day dedicated to hands-on activities. In the hands-on portion of the program, participants will engage in practical training activities that do not involve actual patients but focus on skill development. The primary goal is to provide continuing education training to the dental workforce in order to improve access to dental care for this vulnerable population.

Educational Objectives

  1. Acquire the skills and attitude necessary to become competent and compassionate providers of dental care for patients with diverse needs, particularly individuals with developmental disabilities.
  2. Learn to employ the most effective accommodations to optimize oral health across the lifespan. Focus on evidence-based interventions for preventing, reversing, and arresting dental diseases, both within the dental office and through at-home care.
  3. Develop the skills and knowledge required to provide prevention, primary care, and oral health maintenance for disabled populations without relying on sedation or general anesthesia, promoting safer and more accessible dental care.
  4. Recognize the importance of collaborative teamwork in improving the quality of life for both individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their families. Learn how effective team utilization can enhance the overall care experience.
  5. Gain proficiency in using essential dental equipment, such as mouth props, positioning devices, suction, and techniques for patient immobilization and stabilization.
  6. Learn and practice a range of dental procedures on typodont teeth which includes utilizing Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), Glass Ionomers in Atraumatic Restorative Therapy, and fluoride varnish application.
